The Greene County Ram basketball teams both lost by large margins to the Gilbert Tigers in Gilbert Tuesday.
Girls coach Dean Lyons had named holding the Tigers to 40 points as a goal for the game. The Rams met that goal, allowing the Tigers 37 points, but they didn’t have enough offense to pull off a win. The Rams trailed 9-4 after one quarter, 23-9 at halftime, and 28-16 after three quarters. The Rams scored just one point in the fourth quarter, a Kenna Marquardt free throw, and the final score was 37-17.
As in the game against Nevada last Friday, the Rams had more turnovers than points. The Rams had 30 turnovers while the Tigers had 19.
Laurin Lyons scored six points and had seven rebounds. Marquardt had five points and 10 rebounds. Sunny Mobley, Nicole Rohner and Samantha Hardaway had two points each.
The Rams are 2-3 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and 2-4 overall. The Tigers are 6-3 overall and 6-0 in the HOIAC.
The boys lost by an even bigger margin, 87 to 55. The Tigers averaged 58 points per game going into Tuesday’s match-up, and the Rams were giving up an average of 68 points per game. Many teams score above their average when they play the Rams, although they don’t typically score 50 percent higher, as the Tigers did.
The Tigers shot at 53 percent from the field and at 71 percent from the free throw line, making 17 of 24 shots from the line. The Rams matched the Tigers at the free throw line, making 12 of 18 for 72 percent, but they were 18 of 53 from the field for 34 percent.
Junior Trey Tucker scored the 1,000th point of his high school career on a free throw with 5:36 to play in the fourth quarter. Tucker took an 18.8 point average into the game and scored 22 with two 3-point baskets, five field goals and six of seven free throws. He had seven rebounds also.
The Tigers were up 10 points before the Rams scored, and the score after one quarter was 23-12 for the Tigers. The Tigers made lay-up after lay-up, and the Rams helped the Tigers’ cause with 20 turnovers for the game. Ram fans kept watching for the tide to turn, but it never did. The score at halftime was 44-30 and after three quarters the score was 66-40. Gilbert’s scoring never slowed, while the Rams managed just eight points in the last five minutes of play.
Max Neese scored well above his average, making 17 points, all of them in the first three quarters. He also led the Rams in rebounds with 12. Mitchell Gorsuch scored eight, Lance Hughes scored three, Reid Lamoureux and Trey Hinote scored two each, and Wade Adcock scored one point.
The Rams are 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the HOIAC. The Tigers are 4-1 overall and in the HOIAC.
The Rams host North Polk for a Mega Night in Jefferson Friday.
